How to Sell
Selling with us? Here’s the tea.
Plato’s Closet is always buying — but what we’re looking for changes all the time. It depends on the season, what’s selling fast, and how much we already have on the floor.
If you want to get the most cash for your haul, check our Most Wanted list (what we need ASAP) and our Slowing Down list (what we’re stocked up on) before you come in to sell.
Selling Tips from Our Staff:
Check your clothes (inside and out) for stains/holes.
"Totally normal to have a stain or tiny hole in your own clothes. We all have them! But shoppers want pieces that look new, so worn items are much harder for us to take in."
Make sure your shoes have their soles and laces.
"If they aren't ready to wear, they're going to sit on our shelves for too long. They'll end up on clearance! We can't take in shoes if we know they won't sell. Just double-check really quick before you bring them in!"
Take your clothes off their hangers.
" We work hard to keep wait times short, so we move through buys as quickly as we can. Hangers slow the process down because we have to remove them from every single item and doing that over and over adds up fast."
We don't buy anything too formal or professional.
"If you store it in a garment bag, it's too formal for us. We don't buy formal dresses, suits, or shirts - that's just not our demographic. A quick rule of thumb for men's shirts: if it has a number size, we can't take it."
Make sure your clothes are turned right-side-out and folded.
"We try to be as efficient as possible to keep the wait time down for everyone. If we have to turn everything rights-side-out for you, it REALLY slows down the process."
The more you bring in, the more money you're likely to get.
"Everything is sold here at 50-70% of their original price. We offer our sellers 30% of our price. So, if you only bring in one or two things you won't make as much as if you brought in a full-closet cleanout."
