Mastering The Art of Styling Patterns

Posted by Liah Escobedo on Aug 19th 2025

My favorite part of elevating an outfit and feeling my best is playing around with patterns. Although it can take time to feel comfortable styling them, patterns are such a fun way to unleash your creativity and elevate your look!

Mixing different patterns in your wardrobe adds excitement to everyday life. Whether it’s for a special event or a casual outing, patterns work year-round and in every season. My favorite way to introduce patterns into an outfit is by layering them over simple basics and accessorizing. Statement pieces like a patterned bag or hair accessory are perfect. Personally, I love adding patterns with a cover-up top or a scrunchie. Hair plays a big role in your overall look, and lately I’ve been obsessed with polka-dot scrunchies—they’re trendy and elevate my updo styles effortlessly!

Patterns can be tricky, since not all of them pair well together—sometimes they can clash visually. One tip I use is to accessorize with items that mimic the shape or scale of the pattern I’m wearing. For example, when I wear my mesh crochet cardigan with large holes, I like to balance it with accessories of a similar size. That’s why I paired it with a cherry bag—it complements the cardigan’s texture and elevates the outfit without overwhelming it.

The woman is wearing a black dress with a high slit, a light knit cardigan draped over the shoulders, and sandals, holding a cherry patterned purse.

When introducing a pattern, it’s important to create balance. Start small, especially if you’re working with bold or colorful prints. Neutral pieces are great for grounding patterns and making them feel wearable. A classic go-to of mine is pairing a patterned blouse with denim jeans. You can find so many fun patterned blouses at your local Plato’s Closet—perfect for experimenting with prints that fit every season!

Trial and error is your best friend when it comes to patterns. Don’t be afraid to experiment—have fun exploring different combinations to match your personal style and make a statement!
